Simon originally worked in practical farm management, but at the end of the 1990s he returned to full time education and gained an honours degree in Rural Land Management from the University of Plymouth. Winfrith Newburgh is named after the River Win which runs through the village. The Church of Saint Christopher in Winfrith Newburgh was restored and enlarged extensivley around the year 1854. Some of the original features of Norman architecture still remain including the north doorway.
