Cardiff Bay
The exciting Cardiff Bay area of the City of Cardiff was created when the Cardiff Bay Barrage was built in 1999. The Barrage now links Cardiff with Penarth, encompassing Penarth Marina and Cardiff Bay Wetlands Reserve, and promotes a wealth of water-related activities.
The former Bute Docks and Tiger Bay area once housed dockworkers and sailors who were attracted to the thriving port from around the world. Cardiff Bay’s regeneration was one of the most successful projects of its kind in the UK and the area now offers a rich variety of houses, businesses, hotels and leisure activities.
There are many notable buildings, both new and old. The Pierhead Building, which was once the headquarters of the Bute Dock Company was built in 1897 and is now a visitor and education centre for the Welsh National Assembly. The wooden Norwegian Church was relocated in 1992 and is now a venue for small concerts and exhibitions. These historic buildings now sit alongside the impressive new homes of the Welsh National Opera and The Senedd.
