Margate on Sea
Margate on Sea – more than just home to a famous harbour! As a Cinque port connected to Dover, it has long been home to an important harbour.
Childhood home to JMW Turner, one of Britain’s most famous painters, the reinvigoration of Margate is partly due to it now being the home of the Turner Contemporary Art Gallery. The building was constructed in 2008 to 2011 and opened by Tracey Emin who also had Margate as a childhood home.
A popular holiday destination for many years, there was a pier until 1978. It has Britain’s only listed roller-coaster. Margate’s Shell Grotto was discovered in 1835, but its origins and building are unknown. It has Grade 1 Listed status, with over 4½ million shells arranged in ornate patterns over the walls and ceilings.
