Barnet Tenants Battle Floating Warden

London Surveyors – Two tenants from Hanshaw Drive, Edgeware in the London Borough of Barnet have claimed that their local authority is in breach of its tenancy agreements by introducing plans to introduce a floating warden for sheltered accomodation.

The campaigners believe that the new service would put the lives of tenants and pensioners at risk and a judge in Barnet County Court has order a delay whilst court proceedings continue.

Manchester set to be first City to ‘earn back’ national tax revenues

Manchester Building Surveyors – Manchester is set to become the first city to be handed the freedom to reinvest its own national tax revenues under the Government’s latest proposed ‘City Deal’.

The deal will include the creation of a ‘revolving Infrastructure Fund’. This will allow Greater Manchester to ‘earn back’ a portion of the tax it generates by investing £1.2bn in infrastructure, on a payment-by-results basis. The Government estimates that up to £30m could be earned back in this way.

Liverpool opts for Directly Elected Mayor

Following our article on the subject in February’s newsletter (which can be found here), Liverpool has now decided to elect a Mayor for the city.

The move follows the striking of a so called ‘City Deal’ which will grant Liverpool considerably greater power over its own future. This deal is the first of its kind and includes such measures as the provision of a single investment pot of funds and a new enterprise zone for North Liverpool.

Government urges public to help rough sleepers this Christmas

Housing Minister Grant Shapps has urged people across the country to help solve rough sleeping this Christmas. People are invited to call local 24-hour hotlines if they see someone sleeping on the pavement in their neighbourhood.

The government plans to establish a new national single phone number which will provide a central point of contact for people across the country to get help for rough sleepers in their neighbourhood.

Based on London’s No Second Night Out number, this new phone line and website will ensure anyone wanting to get help for rough sleepers in their area will know where to go and who to call.

The Minister for Housing said: in a civilised society no one should have to sleep on the pavement.
