Could your new home’s decoration be hiding a secret (or skeleton) from the past?

When you remove layers of old decoration from the walls of your new home, you never really know what to expect – except a bit of Polyfilla-ing, perhaps.

A couple in California have made a surprising discovering when redecorating their new home’s bathroom.

Hidden message found 23 years later in a couple’s bathroom

Alex and Jess Monney found a 23-year old message secretly hidden behind the plasterboard of their suburban house.

In 1995, Mr and Mrs Shinseki left the message tucked away to be discovered by future inhabitants. Along with their photo, the couple wrote: “Hi, we’re the Shinseki’s! We remodeled this bathroom summer 1995.  If you’re reading this, that means you’re remodeling the bathroom again. What’s wrong with the way we did it?!?!?”

The couple’s pet rabbit, Cassie has her own photo on the wall. Cassie wrote: “Hi! I’m Cassie the Bunny Rabbit. I lived here too! (I’m potty trained!) I’m going to be the next Cadbury Bunny.”

The photo was placed on social media and has since been shared thousands of times, leading others to share their own secret messages and the strange objects discovered in their homes.

One man left a six-pack of Guinness and a note in the wall when he did some renovations in a house. Another family found the architect and builder’s names under layers of 1911 wallpaper and added their own names, then preserved them under a layer of laqueur to be found by the next renovator.

Have you left a little message behind when moving house, perhaps placed annual notches of your child’s height on a doorframe – or has this made you think about leaving one in the future?

If you’re buying new property in England and Wales, get a survey carried out by an independent Chartered Surveyor. After all, you never know what’s hidden beneath the wallpaper!
