Sowerby
Located in the heart of North Yorkshire, the small village of Sowerby. The author, James Herriot, lived in the town and Sowerby is popular with tourists.
Sowerby has two mentions in the Domesday survey and it remains a largely agricultural area, with commuters travelling to nearby towns and villages. The Parish Church of St Oswald dates from 1140 and is a grade II* listed building. Sowerby’s historic Front Street contains many listed buildings and a beautiful avenue of English lime trees that were planted to celebrate the jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887.
Five war memorials are situated in Sowerby, remembering local men who died during the First and Second World Wars.
Outside its traditional village centre, Sowerby is linked by modern housing development to Thirsk, with its mainline rail link, and is just a 15 minute drive from the A1(M).
